Meeting of the Secretary General with Ambassador of Nigeria

HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), on Monday paid a visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Doha, where he was greeted by HE Yakubu Abdullahi Ahmed, the Ambassador of the Republic of Nigeria to the State of Qatar.

HE Hamel praised the Nigerian government’s focus on fully utilising the enormous gas resources in the country to drive industrialisation, and echoed President HE Muhammadu Buhari’s vision to transform Nigeria into a gas-based economy by 2030.

HE Ahmed reaffirmed the significance of gas to the developing world in general and Nigeria in particular, and noted that gas remains the least polluting fossil fuel in the world.

The esteemed ambassador also shed light on various initiatives and projects currently underway in Nigeria, including the ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative and the $10 billion LNG Train 7 as well as the 614kms-long Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline projects.

HE Hamel apprised HE Ahmed of the details of the upcoming 6th GECF Summit of Heads of State and Government, slated to be held in Doha, Qatar in February 2022.

Meanwhile, the two sides discussed the functioning of the GECF Secretariat. HE Hamel noted the historical contribution of professionals from Nigeria at the Secretariat and invited the interest of highly-qualified Nigerian nationals for various positions.
