HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), today met HE Zamshari Shaharan, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the State of Qatar, to convey his greetings to the newest member of the Forum.
In a visit to the Malaysian Embassy in Doha, HE Hamel commended Malaysia’s unique position in the natural gas world, which is underscored by the country’s status as both an exporter and importer of gas. He also lauded the historical commitment of Malaysia – the fifth largest exporter of LNG in the world – to shape the image of exporting countries as reliable energy suppliers. Malaysia joined the GECF as Observer Member in 2019.
HE Shaharan reflected on the long-standing relationship between energy companies of GECF Member Countries, such as Petronas and Sonatrach, and their shared interest in the development of human capital to advance the gas industry.
HE Hamel noted that the GECF Secretariat stands to benefit greatly if Malaysia upgrades its status to full membership, which will open the door to highly-qualified Malaysians to make their impact in the organisation. He also invited the esteemed diplomat to visit the GECF Secretariat.
Meanwhile, the two sides discussed the upcoming 6th GECF Summit of Heads of State and Government, which is taking place in Doha, Qatar in February 2022.
