The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the global platform of the leading gas producing countries, took part in a back to back industry events in Milan, Italy recently.
At the 4th Global LNG Forum, which examined demand supply dynamics, the role of small scale LNG and the latest technologies that enhance the accessibility of LNG, GECF representative, Eng. Seyed Mohsen Razavi, participated in a panel discussion on “LNG market future outlook – soaring gas prices, supply security and need for new investments”. During the panel discussion, Mr Razavi elaborated on how the lack of investment in the upstream sector and LNG infrastructures resulted in the current tight markets and led to high prices and extreme volatility. The panel further discussed the outlook for the gas and LNG Sectors.
In the second event, on Hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Mr Razavi spoke on the “role of hydrogen in deep energy decarbonisation”. The GECF official shared the results of the two scenarios developed within the formwork of the GECF Global Gas Outlook, namely the Energy Transition Scenario and Hydrogen Scenario.
According to him, hydrogen could contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy system along with other decarbonisation methods such as CCS and renewable power. He concluded his speech with the message that there is no sole solution for worldwide decarbonisation, and that hydrogen is not a game-changer, but it does enhance the process of decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors.
On the second day of the 2nd Global Hydrogen & CCS Forum, Mr Razavi attended a panel discussion on “Critical energy challenges - how hydrogen can help tackle it and how to avoid a false start” and elaborated on the role of natural gas in the production of blue hydrogen and its economic benefits for the energy system.
