HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF, on a Two-Day Visit to the Russian Federation

HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), participated in the 7th International Forum “Russian Energy Week 2024” held in Moscow. During the forum, he attended the main plenary session with the participation of HE Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, and HE Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of Equatorial Guinea.

HE Hamel contributed in the plenary session titled “Global Energy as the Basis for Economic Growth and Well-being: In Search of Balance,” which included participation from HE Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. HE Hamel also delivered a keynote speech at the plenary session on “Hydrocarbons in the Energy of the Future: Using Them Without Damaging the Climate.”

During his visit, HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel held highly productive meetings with HE Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, HE Sergey Tsivilev, Minister of Energy, and HE Viktor Zubkov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Cooperation with GECF and Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC “Gazprom.” He also met with HE Delcy Eloína Rodríguez Gómez, Vice President and Minister of Popular Power for Petroleum of Venezuela.

HE Hamel visited the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” (MPEI), where he met with Dr. Nikolay Rogalev, Rector of MPEI, along with university management and a group of students. Presentations on GECF's structure, functions, and flagship publications were shared. Both parties emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in energy research and capacity building. The meeting concluded with a tour of MPEI’s research offices, and HE Hamel left a commemorative note in the book of honorary guests.

Throughout his meetings, HE Hamel provided updates on the latest developments within the GECF, covering current natural gas market conditions and short- to long-term outlooks. The discussions highlighted the pivotal role of natural gas in sustainable development, energy transitions, and energy security. In-depth exchanges were also held on global gas market dynamics, the role of natural gas in the energy transitions, and the GECF's ongoing efforts to promote cooperation and dialogue among member countries, natural gas consumers, and international organizations.

HE Hamel reaffirmed the GECF's commitment to fostering the development and utilization of natural gas as a clean and sustainable energy source, aligned with the GECF mission to ensure energy security and environmental sustainability. At the conclusion of the visit, HE Hamel provided insights to the media during an interview, sharing the outcomes of his discussions and highlighting GECF’s strategic priorities.
