On the margins of African Energy Week 2025, HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), held a constructive bilateral meeting with HE Birame Souleye Diop, Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of the Republic of #Senegal.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on pressing global and regional energy matters, including the implications of new European Union regulations with their extraterritorial reach on African energy development, the prospect of new African countries joining the GECF family, and the significant contribution of the Forum through its flagship reports, data-driven analyses, and active participation in international fora, which offer Senegal valuable insights to guide policy, strengthen energy planning, and support long-term strategies for maximizing the benefits of its natural gas resources.
HE the Minister welcomed the positive role of the GECF in advancing cooperation and emphasised Senegal’s focus on ensuring that gas development translates into tangible benefits for the population through job creation, industrialization, and greater electricity penetration.
HE the Secretary General expressed his deep appreciation for Senegal’s steadfast support to the Forum and acknowledged the pivotal role of HE the Minister in driving the domestic gas agenda. Looking ahead, HE the Minister invited the GECF to play a prominent role at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference in Dakar on 9–10 December 2025. HE the Secretary General confirmed the Forum’s strong contribution, including a keynote address, high-level interventions, and a dedicated workshop on short- and long-term gas market outlooks.
