H.E. Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF, took part in the High-Level Roundtable 5: Climate, Energy and Solutions for Sustainable Development, during the 9th International OPEC Seminar.
The session gathered distinguished leaders from across the global energy landscape to address the dual challenge of advancing climate goals while ensuring energy security, economic growth, and social inclusivity. In his remarks, H.E. Hamel underlined the pivotal role of natural gas as an enabler of a secure, reliable, and sustainable energy transitions. He emphasized that while the energy mix is evolving, natural gas remains essential in reducing emissions, providing flexibility to power systems, and supporting industrial and economic development, particularly in emerging markets. He also highlighted that global natural gas demand is expected to continue its robust growth, driven by rising energy needs in Asia and the Middle East, industrial expansion, AI data centers, and coal-to-gas switching in power generation. Reflecting on global energy trends, H.E. Hamel stated that the future of energy is indeed the “Golden Age of Natural Gas”, as the fuel continues to provide practical solutions for a just and realistic energy transition. H.E. Hamel highlighted the success of the 9th OPEC International Seminar, notably through the richness of its high-level roundtables and discussions. He expressed his sincere appreciation to H.E. Haitham Al Ghais, Secretary General of OPEC, for his outstanding leadership and the remarkable organization of the event.
