GECF Secretary General, Champions the Role of Natural Gas at WGC2025 Closing Plenary- Part 2

23 May 2025 |

His Excellency Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), delivered a high-level intervention during the closing plenary of the World Gas Conference 2025, titled “The Role of Natural Gas in the Future Energy Systems.”

In his remarks, HE Hamel championed the vital role of natural gas in enhancing global energy security and supporting just, orderly, and equitable energy transitions. He highlighted that natural gas is abundant, with technically recoverable resources widely distributed across the world. However, unlocking this potential and transforming it into usable energy requires substantial infrastructure development.

HE Hamel also underscored that the natural decline of existing gas fields, combined with growing global demand, increases the world’s reliance on new projects and yet-to-be-discovered resources. In this context, he stressed the urgent need for sustained investment across the gas value chain. He called for predictable energy policies, clear long-term demand signals, and regulatory certainty as critical enablers to unlock the capital needed for large-scale infrastructure, from upstream development to LNG terminals and cross-border pipelines.

He warned that insufficient investment would risk undermining energy security, destabilizing markets, and eroding affordability for consumers worldwide. In conclusion, HE Hamel reaffirmed the GECF’s commitment to advancing just, inclusive, and orderly energy transitions, with natural gas as a strategic pillar of clean, reliable, and accessible energy for all.
