GECF AI Workshop: Prof Albertus Retnanto's presentation from Texas A&M University at Qatar

07 June 2023 |

On 6 June 2023, the GECF held the first edition of ‘Artificial Intelligence in the Oil and Gas Industry’ workshop, with the participation of distinguished Professor Dr Albertus Retnanto - Program Chair of Petroleum Engineering in Texas A&M University at Qatar, who delivered a presentation titled “Transformative Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies to Shape the Future of the Energy Industry”.

Prof Retnanto discussed the application of artificial intelligence in the oil and gas industry, emphasising the abundance of available data in the industry and the need to analyse and utilise it effectively.

In his initial session at the workshop, under the topic of “AI in the past, today and in the future”, he described how the adoption of digital technology can lead to diverse benefits, including reducing processing time, improved interpretation consistency, optimised field development, and enhanced production operations. He stressed the importance of complementing data analytics, with sound scientific knowledge, and the potential for the utilisation of predictive algorithms for optimising production and drilling, mentioning the significance of data integration, correlation, and classification in the machine learning workflow.

Additionally, Prof Retnanto also mentioned the challenges faced in handling large volumes of data, including data quality, accuracy, and heterogeneity.
