GECF and Malaysia strengthen ties

24 April 2025 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF, met with HE Dato' Nor Azmie Diron, Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy of #Malaysia. During the meeting, HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel praised Malaysia - a valued Observer Member of the #GECF - for its leadership in both the #global and #regional energy arenas. He acknowledged Malaysia’s strategic role in the hydrocarbons sector, particularly in natural gas, and its steadfast commitment to promoting #energy security, market stability, and international economic cooperation. He also emphasised the indispensable role of natural gas in supporting an orderly, just, and inclusive energy transition in alignment with global efforts to ensure sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy for all. 

Both parties expressed a shared commitment to leveraging Malaysia’s robust expertise, #innovation-driven economy, and strategic geographic position in the Asia-Pacific region to build more resilient and forward-looking energy systems. They explored new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in areas such as technological innovation, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and joint #research. Key priorities identified included advancing cleaner natural gas solutions, accelerating digital transformation and AI integration in the energy sector, and developing collaborative strategies to tackle global energy challenges. 

In this context, HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel reaffirmed the GECF’s strong commitment to supporting #Malaysia during its current #ASEAN Presidency, particularly through enhanced knowledge sharing, targeted capacity development, and deeper collaboration on both regional and global energy agendas.
