H.E. Dr Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General of the GECF, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Baku, Azerbaijan | 2 June 2026 — H.E. Dr Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General of the GECF, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, H.E. Minister Shahbazov once again congratulated H.E. Dr Mshelbila on assuming his position as Secretary General. H.E. Minister Shahbazov also expressed Azerbaijan’s support for the GECF and wished H.E. the Secretary General every success in carrying out his mandate.

Both sides emphasised that the role and function of natural gas are rapidly evolving, particularly in light of the accelerating growth of electrification.
They also discussed the implications of the ongoing situation in the Middle East for the future of natural gas markets, underlining that cooperation among producing countries is not optional, but a fundamental necessity for energy security during this critical period.

Commending Azerbaijan’s forward-looking energy strategy, H.E. Dr Mshelbila underscored that natural gas and renewables will act as partners in the larger, more diversified energy mix of the future. H.E. Dr Mshelbila also briefed H.E. Minister Shahbazov on the preparations for the upcoming 8th GECF Summit of Heads of State and Government and the Ministerial Meeting, scheduled to be hosted by the Russian Federation in October.
