Doha, Qatar | 30 April 2026 — H.E. Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ghulam Hoosein Asmal, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the State of Qatar. The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding and cordial relations between the GECF and the Republic of South Africa. Particular note was made of the Ambassador’s instrumental role in the landmark Memorandum of Understanding between the GECF and South Africa, signed under the esteemed auspices of H.E. Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy of the Republic of South Africa. This milestone agreement has successfully laid a solid foundation for structured cooperation and engagement between both parties. Discussions highlighted South Africa’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its energy sector, including diversifying its energy mix and attracting investment. Given its strategic location at the southern tip of Africa and its role as a key economic hub on the continent, South Africa is recognized as an important gateway for regional energy diplomacy and cooperation. In this context, both sides acknowledged the increasing role of natural gas as a flexible and reliable component in supporting the country’s evolving energy priorities and long-term objectives. The two sides explored opportunities to further elevate cooperation within GECF’s institutional framework, including the potential advancement of South Africa’s participation from Dialogue Partner to Observer status, reflecting a mutual interest in deepening strategic ties. The Secretary General reiterated the GECF’s commitment to South Africa. In turn, the Ambassador expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation with the GECF.
