GECF Secretary General Meets Ambassador of Algeria to Qatar to Strengthen Energy Cooperation

Doha, Qatar | 27 April 2026 — H.E. Dr Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), paid a courtesy call on H.E. Salah Attia, Ambassador of Algeria to the State of Qatar.

Both sides reviewed the longstanding and strategic relationship between the GECF and Algeria, a founding Member Country of the Forum. Discussions underscored Algeria’s historical role in the GECF’s institutional development since its inception, as well as its continued leadership in advancing cooperation among gas-producing countries.

Emphasis was placed on Algeria’s prominent position in the global natural gas landscape as a major gas exporter, supported by its extensive resource base, well-established infrastructure, and decades of experience across the gas value chain, as well as the leading role of Sonatrach. Particular note was made of Algeria’s strategic position on the Mediterranean, serving as a key energy bridge, with a well-developed network and LNG export capacity enabling reliable and flexible supply to international markets, thereby reinforcing its role in energy security.

H.E. Dr Philip Mshelbila, Secretary General, further commended the support of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Gas Research Institute (GRI), headquartered in Algiers, which serves as a cornerstone of the Forum’s research and technology capabilities, fostering innovation, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building among Member Countries.

In turn, H.E. Ambassador Salah Attia expressed appreciation for the GECF’s continued efforts in promoting natural gas as a reliable and sustainable source of energy, and reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to continue strengthening cooperation within the Forum across all its activities, including its statutory meetings and specialized bodies.

The meeting emphasized the shared objective of leveraging natural gas as a driver of energy security, sustainable development, and economic growth, and reflected the strong and enduring partnership between the GECF and Algeria, built on mutual trust, leadership, and a shared vision for the future of natural gas.
