The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has stranded over 7 Mt of monthly global LNG supply, significantly tightening the global gas market. In this context, gas storage has been reinforced as a critical pillar of energy security, acting as a buffer against prolonged supply shocks, particularly in the EU. While the bloc remains broadly capable of meeting current gas consumption without major disruptions, it faces acute challenges in restocking inventories during the upcoming summer injection season. This is driven by storage levels reaching a four-year low at the end of the 2025/2026 winter season, the loss of LNG volumes transiting the Strait, higher spot prices amidst intensifying competition with Asia, and the collapse of the winter-to-summer price spread.
