The staff of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) participated in Qatar Foundation's “Ghars" tree planting campaign to celebrate Qatar Environment Day. "Ghars", literally meaning 'planting' in Arabic, was launched by Qur'anic Botanic Garden in 2011 to raise awareness about protecting the environment. Since its launch, thousands of people in Qatar have participated in tree-planting activities, working toward cultivating 2,022 trees before the World Cup in 20221.
This year, the annual campaign was co-organized by Qatar Foundation, the Qur’anic Botanic Garden and the Qatar National Library.
Aimed both at achieving the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 and overcoming the challenges of climate change, the initiative attracted considerable public interest as well as the support of the Global Shapers, the Arab Youth Climate Movement and various other climate associations.
For the GECF staff, it was their first time participating in the event. In line with the campaign's subject matter, the Forum was represented by its Ecology unit, composed of analysts from the Forum's Energy Economics and Forecasting Department and headed by Mr. Dmitry Sokolov.
In continuation of the GECF's Long-Term Strategy and in accordance with the organisation’s key principles and values, the GECF Team aimed to contribute to ecosystem preservation by showcasing their active involvement in the campaign.
An increased focus on environmental issues and climate change has been an ongoing theme in the Forum in the past months, especially given the GECF's recent status as and Observer Intergovernmental Organisation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
While promoting natural gas as a fuel of choice for the XXI century, the GECF focuses on the fuel's availability, reliability, versatility, affordability, sustainability, and especially its inherent environmentally friendly characteristics. The resource has a critical role to play in making sure there is a balance between an increased need for energy and achieving the emission targets and ambitions of the Paris Agreement.
