FEATURE ARTICLE: COP30 signals climate policy shifts reinforcing the global role of natural gas

20 January 2026 |

The year 2025 marked a pivotal turning point for the global energy sector, as climate-driven policies were reassessed amid fragmented international climate cooperation and the enduring challenge of energy poverty. These shifting priorities were central to the COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil, where the Mutirão Decision reaffirmed the Paris Agreement’s mandate to balance climate action with sustainable development.

Today, the global climate agenda is moving away from aspirational targets toward pragmatic, achievable pathways that reconcile emissions mitigation with economic growth and social progress. Within this framework, natural gas is gaining renewed recognition as a key low-carbon energy source, serving both as a reliable baseload supply and as dispatchable backup for intermittent wind and solar power. Its lower carbon intensity compared with other hydrocarbon fuels makes it an essential tool for addressing the energy trilemma, supporting decarbonization while enhancing energy security and maintaining affordability in an increasingly complex energy and climate landscape.
