The 36th GECF Executive Board Meeting

 Doha, Qatar

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the global platform of the leading gas producing nations, held its 36th Executive Board Meeting, via videoconference due to the COVID-19 restrictions. It was joined by all Member Countries of the Forum as well as four Observers.

The 36th Executive Board Meeting was attended by Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates participated as Observers. The GECF Secretary General HE Yury Sentyurin welcomed the gathering with his introductory remarks and handed over the proceedings to the chair of the meeting Ms. Yazmín Ramírez, the Executive Board member from Venezuela.

During the meet, which spanned over three days, the gathering discussed several signature tools of the GECF, for instance, the 2020 edition of the GECF Global Gas Outlook 2050; a publication that uniquely captures on an annual basis the worldwide energy outlook of natural gas, the Short-Term Gas Market Report; a series of monthly and yearly reports that provide updates on the natural gas and LNG industry worldwide, and the GECF Data Exchange Mechanism; an instrument of collaboration between the GECF Member Countries on sharing of data and statistics.

The Executive Board also appraised progress on the GECF Gas Research Institute (GRI), the Study on the Assessment of Natural Gas Hubs, and the Policy and Procedure document of the GECF Awards.

Further, the meeting reviewed the comprehensive management report of the Secretary General, the Secretariat’s budget and Programme of Work for 2021, and other legal, financial and administrative matters pertaining to the GECF Secretariat’s functioning.

The Executive Board is a governing body of the GECF; second only to the supreme authority vested in the Ministerial Meeting. It directs the operational affairs of the Forum, implements the decisions of the Ministerial Meetings, and considers the yearly Programme of Work of the Secretariat for further approval by the Ministerial Meeting, in accordance with the GECF Statute, Long-Term Strategy, and the 5-Year Working Plan.

The upcoming 22nd Ministerial Meeting in November in Algeria and the 6th GECF Summit of Heads of State and Government in 2021 in Qatar were also discussed at length.

It was decided that the next meeting of the GECF Executive Board will be held on 13-14 October 2020, either in person or through videoconferencing, in Doha, Qatar.
