GECF Gas Symposium
Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago
The GECF and the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries of Trinidad and Tobago held a joint Symposium on the role natural gas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
After the welcome remarks by HE Senator the Hon. Franklin Khan, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) and opening remarks by HE the Secretary General - in which he highlighted the role of GECF as a platform to foster cooperation and dialogue between producers, consumers, governments and energy industries – the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, HE the Hon. Dr. Keith Rowley delivered the Keynote speech. The Prime Minister emphasized not only the continued relevance of gas as the fastest growing energy source apart from renewable power, but he also recognized the need to adapt and address the issue of sustainability in our gas industries.
The above introductory statements were followed by the formal map unveiling of The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, carried out by the organization’s president, Mr. Mark Loquan.
The Gas Symposium - which took place at the Hyatt Regency Conference Center in the Trinidadian capital of Port of Spain - consisted of two panel discussions. A first discussion was around the topic of “Natural Gas and Long Term Energy Security”, Moderated by Mr. Gregory McGuire – with the likes of HE. Senator the Honorable Franklin Khan, MEEI and Tobago serving as panelists.
A second session - moderated by Mr. Rob Veersma from Gazprom International Training B.V. Amsterdam - debated “The Role of Natural Gas in Energy Policies of Latin America and the Caribbean”, with HE Dr.Sentyurin from GECF and HE Eng. Alfonso Blanco Bonilla, Executive Director of OLADE among its high-profile panelists.
The Symposium was brought to a successful conclusion by the insightful closing remarks delivered by Mrs. Penelope Bradshow-Niles, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Trinidad and Tobago.
The Gas Symposium - organized on the sidelines of the 20th GECF Ministerial Meeting on November 14th – was attended by Ministers of GECF Member Countries, Chief Executives of international and intergovernmental organizations as well as industry experts from within and outside the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC). The Symposium was aimed at - among other things - the role natural gas has played in the energy policies of Latin America and Caribbean region.
